What is Acetyl-L-Carnitine?
Acetyl-L-carnitine is an amino acid – a small unit of protein. It occurs naturally in the brain, liver and kidney and plays a role in the normal functioning of the nervous system. The acetyl group that is part of acetyl-L-carnitine contributes to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is required for mental function.
It is also involved in the metabolism of food into energy. Acetyl L-Carnitine is involved in the transfer of long-chain fatty acids, such as triglycerides into mitochondria (a cell’s energy powerhouse), where they can be burnt for energy.
What Does Acetyl-L-Carnitine Do?
Acetyl L-Carnitine is required for the healthy function of heart and skeletal muscle, since these tissues depend in particular on fatty acid oxidation as a source of energy.
May help to support healthy brain function, mood and memory.
Acetyl L-Carnitine may enhance tolerance to physical exercise. It regulates muscle fuel metabolism. Furthermore, increasing muscle total carnitine content reduces muscle glycolysis, increases glycogen storage and is accompanied by an apparent increase in fat metabolism.
Carnitine plays a critical role in cellular metabolism and may have beneficial effects on cardiac and nerve function.
It appears to be necessary for normal functioning of sperm cells and may help to support a healthy reproductive system.
